Sanitarium Nutrition Service

Our business, the way we see it, is to play a part in looking after the health and well-being of our fellow New Zealanders and Australians of all ages. We strongly believe in the importance of healthy, enjoyable eating and that a balanced diet is vital to living a healthier, happier life. This belief naturally carries through to the food products we make and the nutrition information we share.

As you might expect after more than 100 years experience, we have learnt some important lessons and have developed some strong points of view on good nutrition.

Sanitarium's involvement with nutrition education began in the early 1900's with the Sanitarium Vegetarian Cafes. These included cooking classes and nutrition lectures and were set up in all capital cities and many country areas of New Zealand and Australia. Later, Sanitarium began sharing its education services through a chain of retail health food shops.

In 1987, due to growing community interest in nutrition, and to help offset the many contradictory nutrition claims in the media, Sanitarium established the Sanitarium Nutrition Service (SNS) in order to provide the community with reliable, easy-to-understand nutrition information.

Our nutritionists play an important role in promoting good nutrition in the community. We believe that the best diet is based on eating a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals, legumes and nuts as these foods all contribute positively to good health and appear to protect our body against disease. Similarly, we strongly recommend limiting consumption of over-processed foods, which may be high in sugar, fat and salt.

Consumers, health professionals, nutrition associations, home economics and food technology students and teachers have all benefited from the service SNS provides through the articles and newsletters we write, the leaflets and fact sheets we produce and the questions we answer.
